Custom Wire Baskets–More than Meets the Eye

Custom Wire Baskets–More than Meets the Eye

In the world of custom wire baskets, there are a number of options. Not all companies, however, offer the same options, and many of them require a minimum order.

Three M Tool, of York, Pennsylvania, is among those companies that will work with any customer to create the custom basket to meet specified needs, with no minimum order required. On their website, they have a number of sample projects, to offer a glimpse into the wire basket world of innumerable possibilities.

To facilitate their work in the wide variety of industries that their customers represent, Three M Tool has developed their products to be able to meet the needs of customers in aerospace, commercial food service, Department of Defense manufacturing, electronics, heavy manufacturing, industrial supply, pharmaceuticals, optical manufacturing, and precision manufacturing, to name a few. With a customer base ranging from individuals to the contractors working for the United States Armed Forces, Three M Tool specializes in adaptability, in understanding the customer’s needs and finding the best solution for each project.

Among the many options available to any prospective customer are choices in material, lining, mesh size, and surface finish. Although stock baskets are available, in the world of manufacturing, especially, the specifications of variable needs are as diverse as the projects. As many different things are manufactured, there are as many different needs in the manufacturing process.

The material to be used for the custom-engineered basket will depend on a number of things, including the material going in the basket and the material into which the basket will be dipped or which will be sprayed all over the basket. Chemical reactions must be considered, not only with the material of the basket but with the materials being processed, and how that reaction might affect the basket. This is just one example of how the needs of any particular project will differ from those of another.

As far as the mesh size is concerned, that, again, will depend entirely upon the project under consideration. Three M Tool offers mesh openings from 0.015 inches to 1 inch. Obviously, there’s quite a range, and this range can handle some pretty small material, as well as some pretty beefy equipment. Some of the mesh is woven, and some is welded, but Three M Tool will work with you to be sure that the material selected for your wire mesh basket will be able to handle your project, as desired.

Wire mesh is not the only option for a custom metal basket. Although there are the two options with the mesh–welded or woven–there are also options to use perforated metal or expanded metal. Each of the styles has its benefits and its drawbacks, and Three M Tool is more than willing to help you select the right choice for your application. During the design process, you can determine which options are best, considering the cost and the characteristics of each.

On any industrial wire basket, the surface finish may or may not be a significant consideration. Here again, this will depend on the application of the basket. In some cases, the natural finish is fine, and obvious welds are not an issue. In other cases, an epoxy powder coating is wonderfully beneficial, for making baskets easy to identify and avoiding mix-ups that could, potentially, prove to be disastrous.
