The Overachieving Teen

Balancing nutrition, sleep and exercise is the basic recipe for life. Without these three things, a person does not thrive. A teenager is exactly the same with a sprinkling of social life and parental approval. The teen that resides over clubs, holds a job and enrolls in AP classes may be lacking some life essentials. Their call for help will not be the same as the bully who punches kids in the hall or the druggie downing special K in the bathroom.

Parents of overachieving teens should look out for stress induced health issues. The anxiety connected to high performance may cause eating disorders, ulcers and tension headaches. Furthermore, this teen may lack crucial relational skills.

The parents of an overachieving teen should look closely at their own behavior towards the child. Have they pressed for too much? Do they expect a perfect report card on top of everything else just to gain the right college acceptance letter? This teen may be seeking an elusive approval from their parents. Let your teen know how proud you are of them and that it is ok to slow down and be a kid still.
